Whether they’re large or small, public or private, profit-seeking or non-, businesses and organizations need computer networks. Look through any information technology jobs page, and you’re bound to see openings with job titles such as the following:

  • Network administrator
  • Systems administrator
  • Network architect
  • Computer systems administrator
  • Network and computer systems administrator

And so on. Many job titles are defined internally within a company, and so can seem vague or broad. But there are two distinct areas of information technology that can be gleaned from all five of these job titles: systems administration and network administration. These fields are related, and may sometimes overlap duties, but there are differences.
